Footing & Slab Reinforcement

Footing and slab reinforcement inspections are the most critical hold point in residential construction. Before concrete is poured, the engineer inspects the placement, sizing, spacing, and cover of all reinforcement bars and mesh against the structural drawings. We check edge beam and internal beam reinforcement, bottom and top mesh layers, starter bars and dowels, slab thickening, and any specific detailing required by the engineer of record. This inspection must be cleared before any concrete is placed — and it is non-negotiable.

Structural Framing & Connections

Structural framing inspections cover the installation of structural steel, timber framing, or composite systems. We inspect member sizes and grades, connection types and bolt specifications, bracing configuration, tie-down and hold-down details, and the general compliance of the installed framing with the structural drawings. For steel structures, we check weld quality, connection geometry, and any special inspection requirements under AS 4100. For timber, we check species, treatment, and connection hardware against the structural specification.

Formwork Before Concrete

Before concrete is placed in elevated slabs, suspended slabs, or complex formed elements, the formwork must be inspected for adequacy and compliance with the shoring and propping design. We inspect formwork levels and alignment, shore and prop spacing and capacity, plywood thickness and bearing conditions, and any special shoring requirements for multi-level propping. Formwork failures are one of the most serious risks in concrete construction — our inspection provides written clearance that the formwork is adequate for the pour.

Post-Pour & Structural Element Checks

After concrete placement, we conduct post-pour inspections to assess surface finish, identify any defects, and confirm that the as-poured element matches the design intent. For precast elements, we inspect connections, bearing lengths, and lifting insert installations. For structural steel, post-erection inspections confirm that connections have been fully bolted or welded to specification. We also conduct inspections of structural masonry, retaining walls, and any other elements where a hold point has been specified by the certifier.

What is a hold point and why do certifiers require them?

What is a construction hold point?

A hold point is a designated stage in the construction process where work must stop and a qualified inspector — typically a structural engineer — must attend site, inspect the work, and issue written clearance before construction can continue. Hold points are specified in the Construction Certificate, the structural engineering drawings, or the conditions of the Development Consent.

The purpose of a hold point is to provide independent verification at critical stages that the work has been carried out in accordance with the engineering design. Unlike a routine site visit or progress inspection, a hold point inspection is a formal certification event — the engineer's written clearance is a legal document that forms part of the project's compliance record.

Why do certifiers require engineering sign-off?

Building certifiers in NSW are required by the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act to ensure that construction is carried out in accordance with the Construction Certificate and the approved plans and specifications. For structural elements — particularly reinforced concrete and structural steel — the certifier cannot verify compliance by visual inspection alone. They require the structural engineer to inspect the work and provide written clearance, because the engineer has the technical knowledge, the engineering drawings, and the professional accountability to make that assessment.
