What load-bearing wall assessment involves
A load-bearing wall assessment is not a simple inspection — it is a structural engineering process that requires understanding the whole building, not just the wall you want to remove. Every wall removal has to be understood in the context of the complete structural system: what is above the wall, what is beside it, what is below it, and what happens to all of those elements when the wall is gone and a beam takes its place.
Identifying Structural Walls
Not every wall in a house is structural — but the ones that are can be difficult to identify without engineering knowledge. In a typical single-storey timber-framed home, the structural walls are generally those that run perpendicular to the roof rafters or floor joists, or that sit directly above a beam or bearing point in the storey below. In brick-veneer construction, the structural system is the timber frame behind the brickwork — not the brickwork itself. In double-brick construction, the masonry may be the structural system. We inspect the building, review any available drawings, and determine definitively which walls are structural and which are non-structural partitions — giving you a clear scope for your renovation from the outset.
Tracing the Load Path
Every load in a building follows a path from where it is applied — roof, floor, walls, fixtures — down through the structure to the footings and into the ground. When you remove a wall, you are interrupting that load path, and the beam you install must pick up those loads and carry them to new support points without overstressing any element along the way. We trace the complete load path for your proposed wall removal: calculating the roof and floor loads tributary to the wall, determining the spans and support conditions for the proposed beam, and checking that the columns, posts, or wall sections that will carry the beam reactions can handle the concentrated loads. This analysis drives the beam size, and it often also drives other changes — a new post in the kitchen island, a padded footing below a support column — that your builder needs to know about before they start.
Beam & Connection Design
Once the loads are determined, we size the beam. In most residential wall removals, the replacement beam is a steel universal beam (UB) or parallel flange channel (PFC) section, chosen for its strength-to-depth ratio in the constrained ceiling height of a typical home. We select the section, check strength and serviceability — the beam must carry the load without overstressing and without deflecting more than the Australian Standard limit — and then detail the connections at each end: the bearing plates, bolts, screws, and fixings that transfer the beam reaction into the supporting structure. These connection details are what your builder actually needs on site — and they are often the part of wall removal engineering that generic online guides and budget assessors leave out.
Construction Certification
In NSW, structural alterations to a building — including the removal of load-bearing walls — require a Construction Certificate from a registered building certifier before work can begin, and a Compliance Certificate after the work is complete. Both require engineering documentation. We provide the engineering drawings and RPE certification needed at both stages: the pre-construction structural specification and drawings for the CC application, and the post-construction certification confirming that the work was completed in accordance with our design. Our certifications are accepted by all registered certifiers and councils across NSW.

We do not produce a brief letter saying “the wall can be removed with an appropriate beam” — we produce a complete engineering package with the beam size, section, grade, connection details, support requirements, and construction drawings drawn to scale.

How we work with you
Most homeowners contact us in one of three situations: before they have engaged a builder, when a builder has told them they need engineering, or when a certifier has asked for engineering documentation to issue a Construction Certificate. In all three cases, the process is the same — we assess, design, and certify — but the timing and urgency differ. We can work with all three scenarios and will advise you clearly on what is needed and when.
We are accustomed to working directly with builders on residential renovations — providing technical clarification on our drawings, attending site to inspect the beam installation before the ceiling is closed up, and issuing the post-construction certification for the Compliance Certificate. We treat builders as professional partners in the construction process, and our documentation is written to be useful on site, not just in a council file.
For homeowners, we explain what we have found and what it means in plain language — not just in engineering notation. If the wall you want to remove is not structural, we will tell you that directly and save you the cost of beam installation. If it is structural and the beam is straightforward, we will tell you that too.
